Jane Shimmin Exhibition

Jane Shimmin
Echoes of Time and Place

Exhibition 28th April to 3rd June 2023
Open Friday and Saturday 11 - 5pm

This body of work was made in response to a visit to the outer Hebrides early last year.

Apart from its inherent natural beauty, open spaces and wildness, I was fascinated by the sense of history going back thousands of years. The evidence of this is everywhere: in the ancient stones, remains, patterns and shapes in the land formed by centuries of cultivation and clearance.

Most poignant for me was the evidence of depopulation due to lack of economic opportunities resulting in abandoned and ruined houses which have now become part of the character of the islands.

My paintings try to convey my experience of being in this landscape, and of its combination of beauty and bleakness.

My process involves making many quick rough paintings and sketches in situ in which I try to capture the energy of the place and what I see, hear and feel around me.

Once back in my studio I use these as inspiration for paintings.

I don’t ever try to depict a particular place and once begun, I work intuitively and the paintings take on a life of their own. I love the paint for itself and enjoy making opportunities for ‘accidents’ to happen.

I like to work in many layers, and for these paintings I hope that this reflects the rich history of the landscape itself.

Artist Rooms Series at King Street Arts

Welcome to this occasional series where we at King Street Arts invite you into an artist’s world. We aim to give you an insight into their inspirations, source material, working processes, as well as the finished work.

We have known Jane for over three years and have seen her work grow during this period as part of her continued engagement with her processes as a serious-minded artist.

This body of work represents an exploration of a place, both specific in its felt responses to that place, but also playing with abstraction in representation and composition. Still readable as landscapes, they transport you beyond the materiality of place to the felt experience of being there.

Jane’s sketchbooks which are included in the gallery for you to see, show her consideration of process and the journey of making which each artwork undergoes to finish. Although lost in the finished surface, the underlayers with their rapid and immediate drawing are integral to her working methods and allow the subtlety of the finished form to emerge to the viewer, with its accumulated sense of time and experience. Each painting is a unique object, not reproduced in prints, echoing the original experience of the artist with that landscape.
