On a walk near Shap in autumn 2023 we came across a host of goldfinches on a large patch of teasels. They were too far away to see them clearly and flew off as we drew near. So I took many photos of goldfinches on my bird feeder to aid this composition.

Nuthatches blend in so well that I don’t often see them, but in autumn when the leaves fall, it is easier to catch a glimpse of them foraging along the branches.

This moorhen nest was right under the windows of a hide at Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve, but everyone else ignored them and scanned with binoculars for birds in the distance. The tiny chicks were such a delight to watch.

The edge of the sea must be a liminal space for a creature like the crab which can live in the water and on land. This crab seems to just be at a temporary rest before the swirling tide moves it on.

I imagined this lobster at Lamlash Bay crouching under a rock near a bed of maerl – a hard algae that forms spiky underwater carpets. It took me several experiments to work out how to give an impressionistic representation of these algae.

This piece was inspired by the wonderful regeneration of Lamlach Bay, Arran and contains a few of the special animals to be found there: the tiny curled octopus, seven-armed starfish,  cuckoo wrasse and young cod. It was a challenge to make the fish translucent and to make the all-important kelp fronds which give them shelter.

An octopus at Lamlash Bay, Arran, with her collection of shells, algae and corals. It gave me an artistic conundrum; how to represent a creature that likes to camouflage itself, as I did not want the octopus to disappear entirely.

The various forms of corals are such fun to study and create. Of course the diorama needed inhabitants; the pair of clownfish hiding in their favourite anemones, the pair of butterfly fish guarding each other and a translucent jelly fish drifting by.

Small boxes need to star just one species. The snakelocks anemone is a bit of a prima donna compared with other anemones. I thought it would be hard to paint all those tentacles so I made it using pre-coloured polymer clay.

This sea slug or nudibranch feeds on algae and then ingests the algae’s chloroplasts into its own body so it can photosynthesise. Amazing! I had to make two, so I could show it with ‘wings’ folded or spread out like a leaf.

The sea lemon (a nudibranch) feeds on sponges, mainly the breadcrumb sponge (the yellowy one), though I placed it on a red encrusting sponge for contrast. I also included a free-standing purse sponge.

I fell in love with nudibranchs when I discovered them. There are over 100 species found in UK waters. Rainbow nudibranchs feed on the tentacles of the tube anemone. They bite off the tips of the tube anemone's tentacles – don’t worry - its tentacles grow back. The complexity of the colouring of the rainbow nudibranch made me choose to create its cerata from pre-coloured blue/pink polymer clay and only use paint to make the tips yellow.

The turkey tail is a small, tough, bracket fungus that grows in tiered layers on dead wood. It has rings of different colours, which made it a perfect candidate for using pre-coloured polymer clay. I was astonished to learn that is has a so-far-unproven ability to improve response to cancer medicines and radiation.

A gelli-plate background suggested sea currents. The yellow-tailed snapper is such a handsome fish, swimming in schools near the coral reefs, which I made in blues, yellows and greens to keep the colour scheme harmonious.

This started life as an experimental watercolour using different techniques in a playful way to create a dynamic texture. It didn’t work as a whole however so I tore it up and collaged it back together as a coral background for an imaginary species of parrotfish. Parrotfish are very colourful and eat coral.

I was invited to create a cover for Thrive, a local magazine about food. I wanted to add some living creatures to subliminally indicate that the plants were pesticide-free. This picture is a slight adaptation of that cover.

Orange-tip butterflies and cuckooflowers are such a characteristic sign of spring in the damp meadows near me. The idea for this picture grew from the spring-like colours and patterns of the gelli-printed background.

I have often explored the Forest of Bowland . This is part memory, part imagination. The hills of Bowland in their patchwork colours at the end of an autumn day seemed to need a kestrel hovering overhead, though I have more often seen gulls or buzzards.
